From natural waterways to piping systems, we can support your stormwater needs for any stage of the project, including stormwater studies, modeling, design and construction support services.

Burns & McDonnell's stormwater design capabilities include open channel and enclosed system design to more specialized design, such as channel stabilization. We also promote the use of current best management practices and low impact development design.

In-house services include geographic information systems (GIS) and an environmental support team that can provide consulting services on all permitting aspects of your project, including submittals, and coordination with state and federal agencies.

"Water, Water Everywhere" Streaming Audio:
Green Streambank Reinforcement


Rick Besancon, PE, a Burns & McDonnell project manager, discusses streambank stabilization with Deb O'Bannon, host of the University of Missouri-Kansas City civil engineering radio show "Water, Water Everywhere." Stabilization is needed to protect property (including roads and bridges) and prevent erosion and high sediment content in streams. The method he shared uses downed trees to stabilize the bank and allow resedimentation and stabilization.

In 1898, the year Burns & McDonnell was founded, it sometimes took a great deal of salesmanship to convince Midwestern town councils and business leaders that they should spend money on water purification plants and wastewater treatment facilities. Keeping bacteria out of drinking water and sewage out of watersheds was not always a priority for towns that had been on the edge of America's frontier only a few years earlier.
